Putting Something Back

Our company, A Tent With A View has always been at the forefront of animal conservation which began when we arrived in Saadani National Park in 1995. As the first lodge in Saadani, we were determined to get involved early on with anti-poaching efforts in the then Saadani Game Reserve. Hard work and determination has meant that since 2005 animal numbers have increased to what they are today and the arrival of TANAPA (Tanzania national Parks Authority) and Saadani achieving national park status has surely helped with this. Tent With A View’s relationship with TANAPA has gone from strength to strength and we are now collaborating, together with world renowned elephant expert Dr Alfred Kikoti, on the first elephant collaring project in Saadani and the very first in Tanzania involving the private sector.

July 2011 saw the start of A Tent With A View’s new initiative in Saadani and Selous Game Reserve – Dr’s on Safari. Third year medical students from Southampton Medical school come out on an elective for 2 months each year to help out in Mkwaja Village hospital (Saadani) and Kisaki Village hospital (Selous). The Dr’s stay at either Tent With A View, Saadani or Sable Mountain Lodge for the duration and we work closely with the Dr’s to see what needs can be met for each of the hospitals. The project is in its first year but we have already made good progress in information gathering by the students which can enable us to see each of the community’s needs in terms of medical care.

2010 was also the start of our relationship with Kerege orphanage in Bagamoyo. Together with a major travel agent in the UK, we have pledged to help the orphanage achieve their aims each year by donating a large percentage of monies received in payments from guests who book on group tours with the UK agent. This year, we will purchase solar panels for the orphanage and pre-school who provide an early education, nutrition and medical care for 106 Tanzanian children.
