It is also possible to do a spice tour in the afternoon. The history of Zanzibar would be incomplete without the spice trade – cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon and many other spices brought the Sultans of Oman to these shores and were partly responsible for the beginning of the infamous slave trade. The plantations are located just outside Stone Town, and a tour of these dazzles the senses with fresh spices and provides an insight into the number of spices produced and their incredible value for treating many ailments. This is also the cheapest place to purchase spices and spice oils.
Accommodation is in the Dhow Palace or Tembo Hotels, both of which are wonderfully placed in the heart of Zanzibar Stone Town, very comfortable, and oozing the charm of the island.
COST: $250/person (minimum 2 people) including return flights from Saadani, airstrip transfers, and B&B in the Dhow Palace Hotel on Zanzibar.
